The Data Science Group at the IBS Pioneer Research Center for Mathematical and Computational Sciences started on January 1st, 2019. The group is led by Meeyoung Cha, who is an associate professor in the School of Computing at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and an adjunct professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. She previously worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) in Germany. Meeyoung’s interests include data science and information science, with a focus on modeling socially relevant information propagation processes. Her research on misinformation, poverty mapping, fraud detection,and long-tail content has received over 20,000 citations and best paper awards at a number of conferences. She has received the Korean Young Information Scientist Award 2019, AAAI ICWSM Test-of-Time Award 2020, Minister’s Award of Science and ICT of Korea 2022, and ACM IMC Test-of-Time Award 2022.
Innovative analyses of data reveal interesting patterns that could provide keys to addressing social challenges. Data Science Group at the Pioneer Research Center for Mathematical and Computational Sciences, IBS, is pursuing research to analyze data from disparate sources such as the Internet, social networks, and biological signals to find meaningful insights for tackling various social problems. The group is currently working on improving the quality of life by developing algorithms that can characterize fake news, detect customs fraud, as well as that yield human behavior modeling to improve sleep disorders. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, the group is also developing artificial intelligence methods that can predict population dynamics and poverty mapping. We are dedicated to using data science and artificial intelligence to solving global societal problems.

데이터 안에 숨어있는 패턴을 면밀히 파악하고 분석하면 사회 난제 해결의 실마리를 찾아낼 수 있습니다. 수리 및 계산과학 연구단 데이터 사이언스 그룹은 인터넷, 사회연결망, 생체신호 등 다양한 데이터를 분석하고 모델링 및 딥러닝 학습을 통해 유의미한 결과를 찾아내는 연구를 수행합니다. 가짜뉴스를 탐지하고, 세관 사기를 적발할 수 있는 알고리즘을 개발하여 사회 문제를 해결하는 한편, 수면 패턴 데이터를 분석해 수면 장애를 개선할 수 있는 인간행동 모델링을 제시해 삶의 질을 향상하기 위한 연구도 진행됩니다. 건물과 도로를 찍은 인공위성 영상을 토대로 개발도상국의 인구밀도, 도시 스프롤 현상, 경제 및 빈곤 예측을 위한 인공지능 방법론을 개발하여 전 지구적 사회문제 해결에 기여하고자 합니다.
